ROSH HASHANAH GREETINGS from Rabbi Steinhardt - September 8, 2010

I look forward to seeing so many of you beginning this evening and continuing through Rosh HaShanah…I know so many of you have been busy shopping for food and clothes and preparing for guests, and making matzah balls and soup and briskets and turkeys and salads and cakes and setting tables! Everyone at the synagogue has been in “high gear” preparing every single detail …from the parking, to the lawn maintenance, to the air conditioning (expect it to be cold!), the greeters and ushers and gabbais, seating, hand outs, aliyot and the music and sermons…It’s a lot of work.  It’s exhausting just trying to RECALL all these details.

Rabbi Englander and I just got off a conference call with Ambassador Michael Oren. It was a very good report of the direct conversations that have begun with President Abbas and Prime Minister Netanyahu. It was a beginning. The conversations were direct.  He said: “The two leaders made substantive progress in creating a framework for peace.”

There is an intriguing story unfolding in Chile. Thirty-three miners have been discovered alive after having been buried and mistakenly lost since August 5. They are alive, having lost an average of twenty pounds each. They have remained alive by eating small amounts of emergency supplies that were provided when they originally descended.

The Ruth and Edward Taubman Early Childhood Center at B’nai Torah Congregation has earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) – the nation’s leading organization of early childhood professionals. The Ruth and Edward Taubman ECC is the only Jewish preschool in South Palm Beach County to have earned that distinction.

As I walked up to the podium about fifteen of my colleagues said “Keep it short Steinhardt.”  Interesting how, given the opportunity, rabbis so quickly become congregants!  Well, I will do my best.
